Australian Gunpla Builders World Cup 2012 :
On the 14th of July 2012, the 3rd Australian Gunpla Builders World Cup was held as a part of the SMASH! Anime Convention at the Sydney Convention Center on Darling Harbour in Sydney, Australia.
With a rule change disallowing entry into the Secondary Categories if you have placed in any category in previous years, I was only able to enter one build into the competition this year with that build being the Last Champion of Zeon.
I once again, drove 11 odd hours to Sydney to participate with my build disassembled and packed away carefully inside boxes to protect it from damage. I was relieved once I got there and everything was in good condition. Drop off time for the models was between 1 and 5pm on the day before the competition and I was one of the first to get there and set up.
I got a phone call later that evening letting me know that I had placed 2nd in the Open category! That's right, 2nd for the 3rd year in a row!!
The day of the competition arrived and at first glance, I was gobsmacked with the increase in skill on show this year. The first placed entry was by Mark Carlisle who won last years competition as well. He made a custom Kshatriya 'Centipede' that was made using 2 HGUC Kshatriyas and 4 SD Kshatriyas and included that on the base with an EWAC Zak and a Zaku II all in 1/144. 2nd place was my Kshatriya and 3rd place was an excellent 1/100 scaled Delta Gundam that had been created by using a few 1/100 kits (Delta + and Hyaku Shiki). 3rd place was built by the gentleman, Billy, who won the inaugural BAKUC back in 2010.
There were a lot of other entries that I thought would have done better but unfortunately didn't such as the Zaku Sniper dio and the underwater Zaku II with Gundam dio.
Whilst I was there, I took some video of the event and models on show. Below is the video I have uploaded to YouTube :
I also took tons of pictures of the event and all can be found in the Gallery which can be accessed by clicking the link at the bottom of the page.
If anyone sees their model in the Gallery and would like the original photo, please drop me a line via the Contact page and I'll be more than happy to email them to you.
Once again, a big thanks goes out to Rhyan and the guys from Hobbyco and SMASH! for putting this event on. Every year goes by and it gets bigger and better each time. Congrats guys and keep it up - the community appreciates it!
